Mr. Odell Thomas, 73, of Statesville, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. He was born Oct. 7, 1940, a son of the late Coy and Carrie Victoria McGimpsey Thomas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Troy Lee Thomas and Utter Thomas. Odell was a 1958 graduate of Olive High School and a 1962 graduate of Fayetteville State University. He retired from Iredell-Statesville School System as a teacher for 35 years. His last employment was Union Grove Elementary School. Odell was a member of Central Church of Christ in Mooresville, a member of the North State Football Association for 47 years and also a member of the Piedmont Basketball Officials Association for 47 years. He is survived by his wife, Della Mae Young Thomas, of 49 years, of the home; a son, Odell Williams; a grandson, Isaiah Williams, both of Morganton; brother, Robert McGimpsey and wife, Lynn, of California; sisters, Pattie Sue McGimpsey, Coy Ann Surratt, Remonia Harris and Pastor Audrey Gwynn, all of Morganton; brother, Jackie Thomas and wife, Margaret, also of Morganton; special nieces, Lacindra Surratt, of High Point and Marlene Surratt, of Morganton; sister-in-law, Jacqueline (Jackie) Thomas, of Morganton; aunt, Elmer Caldwell, of California; and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. Cylan Amir Turner, 1 year old infant son of Candra La'She Turner, passed away on Friday morning, August 28, 2015, following an accident. He was born in Iredell County on May 9, 2014. He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandparents, Smith Turner and Helen Turner. In addition to his mother, he leaves to cherish the memory of his life his paternal grandmother, Aleia Roberts of Statesville; his maternal grandmother, Kendra (Michael) Taylor of the home; his maternal grandfather, Jeffrey Turner, Sr. of Statesville; his materal great grandparents, Ransom Gillespie of Harmony and Lillian Dye of Statesville; his aunts and uncles, Jeffrey Turner, Jr. of Charlotte; Michael Turner and Chanceler Turner, both of the home, Jasmine Turner of New York and Malik Taylor of Gastonia; his godparents, Ashley Gillespie and Stephen Sims; his special cousin, Aubrey Mobley; and a host of other relatives and dear friends. Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Horizon Church, 316 Signal Hill Drive, Statesville. Pastor Charles Williams is pastor, Apostle Sylvester Gillespie will officiate and Rev. Harrison Gillespie will eulogize. Burial will follow in the Belmont Cemetery.
